American Independence Day is being celebrated in style at Clacton Pier.

A number of visitors will be heading to the town to take part in the celebrations next Saturday (June 30) including Elvis and an American hot rods display.

The US theme will be maintained with the Pier’s now famous hot dog eating competition and there will be plenty more to pull in the crowds along with all the usual rides and attractions.

Elvis Presley tribute act Chris Vegas will be performing live between 1 and 4pm and he will also take charge of the hot dog eating competition which all gets under way at 2pm.

Between 6pm and 10pm Sammy B takes over with a tribute to Amy Winehouse to complete the free entertainment for the day.

Then on Sunday Stevie Ritchie will be singing outside the Boardwalk from 1pm to 4pm.

Nigel Brown, the Pier’s Communications Manager, said that the team is always looking to put on special themed events in addition to the normal attractions available at the landmark site.

“This particular event is usually very popular and well attended and we always stage it on the nearest Saturday to July 4,” he added.

“It’s about providing as much family fun as possible for all ages and it will be kept coming throughout the summer.

“The next big date to put in the diary will be the official opening of the Pier’s new £4 million development on July 21 which is also the attraction’s 147th birthday. There will be lots going on as well another firework extravaganza in the evening.”
