The lighting around Clacton Pier will be turning pink to support organ donor awareness week.

The aim is to raise the profile of the campaign and to get people talking about the issue with their families in a bid to save lives.

Awareness week runs from September 2 to 8 and includes a number of national initiatives – which include asking buildings to be lit up in the campaign colour.

Nigel Brown, Communications Manager at the Pier, said it was delighted to be asked to lend its support.

“As part of last year’s £4 million development we introduced the new system which allows us to light up the landmark in virtually any colour,” he said.

“We have already supported several organisations which have held awareness weeks and organ donation is certainly a very worthwhile cause to back.

“What we will be doing will literally shine a light on the campaign in the hopes that people will be inspired to both save and improve lives.

“Those who donate organs are incredibly generous and the act can have a tremendous impact on the lives of the recipients.”

From spring 2020, organ donation in England will move to an 'opt out' system.

This means that all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups.

Everyone will still have a choice if you want to be an organ donor or not when they die. The law is being changed to help save and improve more lives.

Every day across the UK, someone dies waiting for a transplant. The NHSBT campaign is asking everyone to record their organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and tell their family and friends what they have decided.
