Memorial Benches

A lasting tribute in a place full of memories

Sponsoring a memorial bench on Clacton Pier offers a lasting way to remember someone special. It can be a place to pause and reflect, to sit with memories, and to feel close to someone who loved the sea or simply enjoyed time spent here.

All benches are placed at the seaward end of the pier, looking out across the water — a peaceful and open space away from the busier areas, where many people find comfort and calm.

What’s Included

Each memorial bench sponsorship includes:

  • A bench installed at the seaward end of the pier
  • A plaque with your chosen inscription
  • Maintenance and care for a period of 10 years

We’ll work with you to confirm the wording for the plaque and to ensure the placement feels right.

At the end of the sponsorship term, we’ll be in touch to talk through the options for renewal or removal.

Cost

The cost for a memorial bench sponsorship is a minimum donation of £1,200, covering the bench, plaque, installation, and care for 10 years.

Spaces are limited, and locations are allocated depending on availability at the time of enquiry.

Terms and Conditions

We understand how important a memorial bench can be, and we will always treat each sponsorship with care and respect. To help ensure clarity and avoid misunderstanding, please take a moment to read the terms and conditions below before applying.

Bench Sponsorship

  • All memorial benches are located at the seaward end of Clacton Pier, looking out to sea.

  • The sponsorship term is for a period of 10 years from the date of installation.

  • At the end of the 10-year period, we will contact the sponsor to offer the option of renewing the agreement, updating the plaque, or arranging for removal.

  • If we are unable to make contact, the bench and plaque may be respectfully removed or repurposed.

Plaques

  • Each bench includes one plaque with a personalised inscription, agreed in advance with the sponsor.

  • Inscriptions are subject to approval by Clacton Pier and must be appropriate for a public, family-friendly setting.

  • The plaque remains the property of Clacton Pier but may be returned to the sponsor at the end of the sponsorship term if requested.

Bench Maintenance

  • Clacton Pier will be responsible for maintaining the bench for the duration of the sponsorship term, including routine cleaning and repair as required.

  • If a bench is damaged beyond repair (e.g. due to extreme weather or vandalism), we will contact the sponsor to discuss replacement options. Any replacement may incur a fee.

  • We reserve the right to relocate benches in exceptional circumstances (e.g. for operational, structural, or safety reasons), but will always attempt to preserve the peaceful and respectful nature of the original setting.

Flowers and Personal Items

  • We kindly ask that no flowers, decorations, photographs, or personal items are placed on or around the bench at any time.

  • This is to help maintain a respectful and uncluttered environment for all visitors and ensure the safety and cleanliness of the pier.

  • Any such items may be removed without notice.

General

  • While we welcome visitors to enjoy the benches, they remain part of a working public attraction. We cannot guarantee exclusivity or restrict access to particular benches at any time.

  • Sponsorship of a memorial bench does not confer any ownership rights over the bench, plaque, or pier location.

  • All correspondence regarding the sponsorship will be sent to the named sponsor using the contact details provided at the time of application. It is the sponsor’s responsibility to inform us of any changes.
