Clacton Pier’s 148th birthday celebrations went with a real bang
at the weekend.

More than 2,000 people packed onto the attraction to watch a free
firework display on Saturday evening with many more watching from the Upper and
Lower Promenades.

The event had to deal with a mixture of weather – from glorious sunshine
to rain and even a clap of thunder during the day – but it did not prevent
revellers turning out to join in the fun.

Nigel Brown, the Pier’s Communications Manager, said: “We were delighted
with the turnout and were pleased to celebrate our birthday with so many people
who had come along to enjoy themselves.

“The weather could have been kinder at times but with our undercover
attractions there was plenty on offer for everyone come rain or shine. We had
around 6,000 people across the whole day day.”

Gemma Bland showed everyone the way to do it by munching her was through
eight donuts in three minutes to win the annual competition and collected a
voucher and certificate for her efforts.

Tracey Moorehouse, who was performing on stage, also compered the event
and in the evening she was followed by SMC as part of the free live music.

James Magic Entertainment kept the kids happy with his four shows
throughout the day while Op Party provided the face painting and glitter
station all afternoon.

Clacton Classic Car Club also brought along a couple of vehicles to display
at the front of the Pier.

There was further fun on Sunday with the music coming from Steve Ritchie
and James Magic Entertainment returning with his box of tricks.
