One of Clacton Pier’s most popular events got off to a wunderbar start.

Oktoberfest – which is staged over three consecutive weekends – packs in a host of family fun, free live entertainment, games and authentic German food and beer.

Based in a large marquee in front of the Boardwalk Bar and Grill, it includes live music acts and an Oompah Band and creates a true Hofbrauhaus atmosphere for all ages to enjoy.

The crowds flocked to the opening on Saturday and the large benches and tables soon filled up.

Harry Peek, the pier’s general manager, said it was the perfect start and everyone was in the mood to have a good time.

“It wasn’t long before everyone was up singing and dancing and enjoying the music, food and beer,” he added.

“The feedback from the first weekend has been phenomenal and we had two great days of fun, and mostly in the sun!

“We had a new act, Three’s A Crowd, on Sunday to share the musical duties with Ein Kline Oompah Band and it proved a great success while Tail Feathers were with us on Saturday.”

This is the third year of the pier hosting an Oktoberfest and it continues on September 27 and 28 and finishes on October 4 and 5.

It is one of the few events of its kind in the country where it is free to attend and people only pay for what they eat and drink.

Plenty of those who went along at the weekend dressed up and pier mascot Sidney was also there in his lederhosen.

Comedy Bavarians Heidi, Hans and Gunter were on hand to get the atmosphere going and soon had everyone involved in the fun and games.

The entertainment begins at 1pm each day and due to popular demand will be extended to 8pm on Saturday.

“It’s great to see some of the same faces returning while we have also welcomed new visitors to an event which helps extend the season,” added Mr Peek.
