New celebration benches on Clacton Pier have proved popular with more than half the spaces already taken up.

A total of 15 seats have been made and installed at the top end of the landmark attraction, looking out to sea.

The idea is to help remember a loved one or to mark a special milestone or occasion and the initiative was brought in due to requests from customers and visitors.

One was paid for by former owners of the pier, the Goss family, and another by the family of a member of staff who recently passed away.

Others are in memory of loved ones who enjoyed visiting the attraction and spending time there with relatives, or to remember a special occasion.

Pier general manager Harry Peek said he is delighted with the uptake.

“We were aware there was a demand but have been surprised how quickly it has taken off and the response we have received,” he added.

“The first two phases have been completed in less than three months and we are now moving on to phase three. It is a one-off opportunity and there will only be four phases in all.”

The £1,200 sponsorship donation includes the bench, its installation, a personal plaque with inscription as well as maintenance and care.

The pier has worked with a leading manufacturer to come up with a quality product which will stand the test of time.

“Obviously the benches are used by lots of people but it has been nice to see those who have chosen one coming down and sitting on them,” explained Mr Peek.

“Each has its own story to tell and they become part of the overall history of the pier.

“This is a totally non-profit making scheme with the donation covering costs and also providing new quality facilities which will benefit those who enjoy spending time at the seaward end of the pier.”

Santa’s Enchanted Grotto is back open at the pier this weekend following a successful launch.

Each child receives a bespoke luxury toy penguin from Father Christmas and a freshly baked cookie from Mrs Claus as well as the experience of the North Pole environment with animatronic characters to meet. The cost is £16.50 per child and no charge for accompanying adults.

The Grotto will also be open on December 13/14 and then from December 20 to 24 with time slots going fast.
