Whitsun half term got off to a sizzling swashbuckling start at Clacton Pier.

A bumper bank holiday weekend with blue skies and soaring temperatures brought families flocking to the attraction and they were treated to a whole package of fun.

A brand new buccaneering event, Pirates Ahoy!, set sail aboard the good ship Lubberly Jubberly staged in the in the Jolly Roger Theatre – and the free show was an immediate hit.

There was also a hunt for hidden treasure, pier mascot Sidney was meeting young fans in his new outfit, there was a free fireworks display with pirate-themed music on Sunday night as well as free live music across the weekend.

The fireworks were also streamed live for those unable to attend so they did not miss out.

Communications manager Nigel Brown said it was just about the perfect start to half term and hoped the weather would continue.

“Phew what a scorcher,” he said. “We couldn’t have asked for better in May and an early heatwave was just what the doctor ordered.

“It was great to see families having fun in the sun and enjoying all that was on offer.

“The motley crew in the Jolly Roger worked their magic to put on a fantastic show and that was backed up by the usual rides and attractions.

“It only takes the sun to shine and temperatures to rise to bring the crowds to the coast and it is a very welcome boost for Tendring’s tourism and leisure industry.”

Pirates Ahoy! continues through until Sunday (May 31) with regular 25-minute shows throughout the day as does the treasure hunt.

It is being put on by Laughing Bulldog Events who have partnered the pier in dinosaur events and Halloween festivals.

Full details can be found on the pier’s website and Big Day Out Bands are available with a 25 per cent discount if booked more than 24 hours in advance of a visit.

Mr Brown said there is so much more to come this summer including Clacton Live – three free live music weekends next month with a Reggae weekender on June 13/14, Country Music on June 20/21 and a Best of British the following weekend.

“It really promises to be an amazing season ahead at the pier and we will all have everything crossed that the weather behaves itself,” he added.
