Clacton Pier paid its own tribute to those who lost their lives in
conflicts across the world on Remembrance Sunday.
The seaside attraction joined the hundreds across the town who gathered at
the war memorial on the Upper Promenade of the seafront.
All advertising on the front screen of the pier was suspended yesterday
(Sunday) and the only display was a giant poppy field.
The lighting system around the structure was also switched to red, white,
and blue to mark the occasion.
Director Billy Ball said the service held at the memorial – just yards away
from the attraction – is always so well attended and seems to draw a larger
crowd each year.
“Remembrance Sunday is a chance for all of us to remember and pay
tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who defended our freedom over so
many decades,” he added.
“This includes those in the armed and emergency services who continue to
carry out this role as a result of conflict or terrorism.
“It was an honour for us to commemorate all who have lost their lives to
protect ours through the poppy field on our screen and special lighting.”
The Pier also laid on free coffee, tea and biscuits for all serving or
former service men and woman throughout Sunday.
