Youngsters from right across the Tendring district pounded the promenade to raise vital Scout funds on Sunday.

More than 80 Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Squirrels took part in the sponsored walk from Walton Pier to Clacton Pier.

They were joined by siblings and supporting adults in the annual effort which brought in £4,000.

The event had originally been planned for June but had to be postponed at the last moment due to a heatwave.

District Lead Volunteer Julie Talbot praised all those who joined in the trek along the Lower Promenade.

“We were delighted with the turnout, especially due to the change of date, and the conditions were certainly far more favourable than they would have been in June,” she added.

“I am also grateful to those who helped organise and stage the event, which is also important to raise our profile, as well as Clacton Pier for their backing.”

Older walkers did the full seven miles from Walton to Clacton while younger ones joined in at Frinton and Holland-on-Sea.

Most of the money goes to individual groups, while ten per cent is used to support district activities.

At the end of the marathon effort the youngsters were given free ride wristbands to have some fun on the pier.

Pier communications manager Nigel Brown said the attraction was delighted to be involved again this year.

“It’s great that these youngsters want to help raise funds and they are a real credit to their organisation,” he said.

“After all that hard graft it was good to see them having fun and enjoying themselves on the rides as a reward. Well done to them all.”
