Busiest early May bank holiday for many years

Clacton Pier had its busiest weekend of the season so far as the crowds
flocked to the Tendring coast to enjoy the sunshine.

People poured through the doors on both Saturday and Sunday with the
predicted high temperatures a reality.

It all helped to make up for a quieter than usual Easter weekend when
takings were down due to the chilly weather.

Pier Director Billy Ball said: “It’s a fact in our business that we need
the sun to shine and it was a welcome boost after what had gone before.

“The Pier was busy both days and we had the Pier to Pier walk going on
as well as the car rally so there was plenty taking place all round. It was
just what we all needed.”

The new attractions as part of the Pier’s £4 million development are
really taking shape with the floors on the mezzanines for both Skull Point
adventure golf course and Dockside Dodgems now completed.

Today a fourth delivery of 60 cubic metres of concrete was made and
poured into place using a long arm from the lower promenade and piping taking
it to inside the front eastern section.

“You can now get a better idea of what the first floor dodgems will look
like and the staircases are now also in place,” added Mr Ball.

“We have picked up most of the time lost due to the Beast from the East
and are well on schedule to get the first phase – which also includes Discovery
Bay adventure play area and restaurant as well as the Captain’s Table coffee
shop – ready for July.

“All the glass for the eastern elevation arrives on Thursday and that
will be put in over the following days.”
